What we built for Barnes & Noble®

  • Browser-based e-reader
  • Cross-device cloud sync
  • EPUB-J document rendering
  • Custom MVC JavaScript
  • Reading-session analytics

The Barnes & Noble relationship arrived through David Rolland — a VP at Electronic Arts during INNOV8’s four-year EA engagement who brought the working relationship with him when he moved to Barnes & Noble. INNOV8 was commissioned to architect and develop the responsive frontend of the Nook web reader: the browser-based companion to Nook e-reader devices that let readers access their entire digital library from any modern browser without installing the native app.

The central engineering challenge was seamless cross-device sync — page position, annotations, and bookmarks had to stay current across the Nook web app, iOS and Android apps, and the dedicated Nook hardware, all in real time. INNOV8 built the state layer on top of Nook’s WebReader API and a custom MVC JavaScript framework (pre-framework-consolidation era, 2012), integrating with EPUB-J for publisher-faithful book rendering. The full case study covers the sync architecture and the reading-session analytics instrumentation.
